Evaluation of Project

Overall, I did enjoy the Goodbye to Berlin project although I did find there was a lot of work and research involved.  I do understand that it is vital to do lots of research to support my ideas, and I did the best I could.  I also felt I rushed my contemporary character slightly, so next time I would start my research earlier.
My favourite part of the project was the contemporary character.  I loved the way we could link 1920’s with current fashion and make up with valid research behind both.  I also liked the idea of club culture and how artists are influenced by it today.  Watching Party Monsters was great too, as I wouldn’t of thought to watch that in my own time.  I like discussing films in class as it is good to see other peoples views on different scenes.
I feel I struggled with the creative side of the project.  This is something I struggle with on most projects as I like to think of my own unique ideas.  I don’t like to choose the same ideas from films I’ve seen or books I’ve read.  I find watching theatre productions and taking pictures of random things help me with ideas.  I find I am able to look into things deeper and pull certain things apart, such as colour theory.
I also enjoyed swapping designs with a partner because it was interesting to see their application techniques and how they interoperate your designs.  This is why it is extremely important to swap designs with your partner before the assessment as you need plenty of time to think about their design and how you are going to manage you time.  For example, when I was creating Bryony’s design, we both decided together that I need to set and prep her hair beforehand.  So we arranged to meet an hour before so I had extra time to be sure all of the hair was set in time to start the assessment.
I didn’t really like having to grade my partner on creating my design.  I didn’t want to be too harsh or too generous, but as Bryony created my design so well, I think I scored her fairly as there were only a few faults.
Next time, I feel I could manage my time management on my blog a little better.  I downloaded an app on my phone and ipad, so I am going to blog on the go or when I have gaps between seminars.   I think this will encourage me to do more blogging because if I see something that inspires me, I can capture it and put it on my blog there and then.
In general, I did like this project.  It was great how we had two elements to it so we could really show our individual creative sides.  I would like to do something like this project again but with different era’s because I like finding similarities that other people may not notice.

Hair chart

Equipment
Small Curlers
Bobby pins
Backcombing brush
Feathers

Method
1. Brush the hair thoroughly to get the knots out whilst you are waiting for the curlers to warm up.
2. Then section of the bottom of the hair and begin to curl, pinning in barrel curls as you go.
3. Then move onto the sides, section off in a triangle pattern to get the wave and repeat the process until the whole head is in barrel curls.
4. Once all of the curls are cool, remove the bobby pins and brush out so they go fluffy.
5. Then with bobby pins again, pin the hair up into a bob shape, and sleek one side behind the ear using hairspray.
6. Lastly, layer the feathers over the top of the bigger section of waves.

I decided to go for a 1920's hairstyle - side parting and curly bush formed into a bob.  I then stuck with the green theme from Sally Bowles and used my idea from Angel for the feathers.

Practise make up

Here are my images of my practise makeup.  I decided to go over my natural lipline in these practise images, however I didn't like it so I am going to stick with the natural line in my final creation.

I decided to stick with a green theme stemmed from Elphaba from Wicked and Sally Bowles.  I chose Elphaba because I think she is similar to Sally where they both just want to be accepted for who they were.  I also stayed with the blocked out eyebrows and redrew higher arched ones in.  I went contemporary with the glitter and in fashion nude lip.

Facechart

Equipment
Mac foundation
Mac eternal sun blush
Green eyeshadow - screenface palette
Clinique Jupiter eyeshadow
Lipstick palette
Snazzaroo glitter
Pritt stick
Concealer palette
Translucent powder
Brushes
Mascara
Mascara wands

Method
1. Firstly, block out the eyebrows by smoothing pritt stick on the hairs.
2. Then, using the concealer palette, block the eyebrows out using the red.  Then dab the right matching concealer on top to totally block out the brows.
3. Then apply the foundation all over the face using the buffing foundation brush, making sure it is blended nicely.
4. Next, set the foundation and eyebrows with Illamasqua's translucent all over the face.
5. Then with the mac blusher, apply this to the cheeks to contour the face.
6. Next, it's onto the eyes, apply the green eyeshadow from the screenface palette over the lid.  Then use the Clinique green to make it darker and contour the eyelid.
7. Then using the eyebrow palette, neatly redraw the eyebrows higher than the original ones.
8. Then apply the peach colour to the lips neatly, making sure they're even.
9. Lastly its the glitter.  Using a sponge, apply the glitter to the outer half of the eyelid and all over the lips.

Key words

My two keywords I have chosen to describe Sally are; Determined and Amazing

Determined - I have chosen this key word because I feel Sally is determined to do a lot of things in life and throughout the film.  She always wants the best, whether it is men or performing for money, she has to be the top of everything.  There is a particular scene when she is so desperate to sleep with Herr Schultz, you can see it in her eyes.

Amazing - I have chosen the word amazing because I think Sally does the best in everything that she does.  She puts 100% into performing and she puts 100% into trying to win Herr Schultz round, even though she knows he is gay.

Making historical contemporary

I printed off 3 of my historical images that Bryony created on me and I collaged over the top to created possible contemporary designs.
The first one I created above - I wanted to use either some thick ribbon or a pipe cleaner to outline the back of the curls.
The second design above - I wanted to get a pretty barrette or hair clip to make the hairstyle a little more pretty.
My third design above - This was my favourite design, and one that I was probably going to go with or something similar.  I love the feather element which represents angel and some ribbon going through the curls.

Contemporary mood board

Angel

I was really drawn to the character Angel from Party Monsters, I loved his persona and often felt sorry for him when he got blamed for things he didn't do.  A similar remorse I felt for Sally during some parts of Cabaret.  His character was actually based on a real life person who was a member of the real Club Kids.

Another reason I was drawn to Angel was his signature feathered wings that he wore very often on nights out.  I believe they made his character and completed his fabulous look.  This is when I decided I wanted to incorporate feathers into my design.  I also thought feathers went well with the burlesque them, which although is dated in itself, it was more up to date than the 1920's.

Actioning

I have chosen my action - 'to perform'.  I have chosen this action because this is Sally's chance to prove to the audience what she can do.  This is her chance to earn the money for her to live on for the next few days/week. If she does not earn the money, she could end up on the streets again, and she definitely doesn't want that.

What does she want? Why does she want it? What will happen if she doesn't get it?

In this scene, I believe Sally would like to have the audience in the palm of her hand. The audience watching her on stage in the film and the audience watching the actual film.  I think she wants this for a few reasons. The Emcee gave her such a big a big introduction I think she feels she has to deliver amazing performance.

I also think she wants to prove to people that she is amazing and works hard for her money.
If she doesn't get the audience on her side, they probably won't come back to see her perform again, which means she won't get any more money to live.

When?/where?

As I suggested in my historical design the time in which this was set was Autumn.  I still believe it could be Autumn time, maybe the time where it was only just starting to get chilly in the evenings as people would go to the club to keep warm.

When thinking about costumes, I didn't think of the weather, I was thinking of what sexy performers would wear now. I didn't have enough time to order any costumes, so I decided to go with something off the shoulder with a bit of cleavage showing for some sexiness.

Stage?

Sally is on the Stage performing in The Kit Kat Klub, which was a club for men and women to attend to enjoy some sexy entertainment.  As this is the contemporary side of the project, I have gathered some modern images of stages and props I think would be used in this era.  Still keeping it sexy and raunchy.

A British guide to Showing off

In class we watched A British Guide to Showing off which is a documentary filmed in 2011 about a competition called 'Alternative Miss World'.  The documentary followed the 12th build up of the beauty pageant.  It starred people such as Ruby Wax and Zandra Rhodes, giving their opinion on what went on in the competition.

It steamed from Andrew Logan seeing a Crufts show and inventing his own pageant - 'Alternative Miss World'.  It involved men and women to dress up in the most crazy and extravagant costumes and dresses and parade down a catwalk.  A winner was then chosen from the finalists.

I think it's great that something like this has been invented, as there are so many quirky and unique people in the world that deserve to show their fabulousness off.  It was also great for something cool to be created in the UK rather than everything stemming from America.

Scene?

I have chosen to create a contemporary hair and make up for Sally for Act 1 Scene 4, because this is the first time we see Sally perform on stage so she has to look fabulous.

I wanted to create the make up for her whilst she is performing because this is when I feel she looks her best.  Yes she makes an effort all of the time, but she looks her best when she is on stage performing.

She is introduced by the Emcee, and the crowd go wild for her when she steps out on stage.  Here is the video of her in this scene from the film.

Party Monsters

I really enjoyed watching Party Monsters, although it was weird and very strange, it helped visually to understand what Club Culture was all about.  Throughout the film I was picking up on fashion and makeup, as well as looking for similarities with Cabaret.  I noticed quite a few, so I am going to go through them below.

Near the beginning of the film, I noticed Michael who was one of the main characters, getting ready for a show.  This reminded me of the scene we first see Sally in when she is getting ready to perform at the club.  They are both applying their makeup and sorting their hair whilst looking into a mirror and I just instantly thought of Sally when I saw Michael.  I also picked up that he has the same attitude to Sally - they both want to be the best and steal the show.

I also noticed that Michael was desperate to have a boyfriend or a bestfriend.  This reminded me of Sally being desperate to have sex with Herr Schultz/Brian.  Throughout the film, I realised that Michael had green nails - as did Sally!  As drag was so popular through the club culture years, I found that having blocked out eyebrows and redrawn ones were quite fashionable.  The same fashion that was in the 1920's.

Leigh Bowery

Leigh Bowery was from Australia, he was a performance artist, club promoter, actor, pop star, model, and fashion designer, based in London.  Leigh is considered as a club culture icon and was very influential on fashion designers and artists.  He influenced huge designers such as, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood!
Leigh Bowery #1863

He was very popular in bars and clubs, and he soon moved in with two friends, Guy Barnes and David Walls - they were known as 'The Three Kings'.  Bowery then decided to go on and design some clothing himself which feature at London, New York and Tokyo fashion week, he then opened up a night club called Taboo.

Leigh Bowery - Alexander McQueen
The image on the left above was designed by Leigh Bowery himself, the image on the right is a piece designed by Alexander McQueen.  You can see the similarities through the checked pattern and the ruffles represented in different ways and places.
From what I have read, Leigh Bowery was a really cool icon in the 80's and to me reminds me of current stars such as Lady Gaga.  She has lots of influence on people and designers nowadays, and has such a big fan base - as did Leigh Bowery.
