Supracolour

We looked at a self portrait of Otto Dix and did a replica using supracolour on our models

Otto Dix, Self-portrait

Equipment

·         Supracolour palette

·         Brushes

·         Sponge

Method

1.       After I had washed and sanitised my hands, I cleansed, toned and moisturised my models face.

2.       I chose to work on one side of my models face so I could focus on the details of the paintwork.  I started with the base which I made from the red and yellow in my palette to create an orange/peach colour using a spatula.

3.       Then using a brush I, covered the face, focusing on some darker and lighter areas by adding more yellow/red.

4.       Once I was happy with my base I started with the darker shaded areas using black and grey.  I applied some of this with the brush and decided to smeer with my clean finger tips, because I found it easier to get into the smaller gaps.  For example, under the eye.

5.       Lastly I applied the white to the face.  I decided to leave this til last because I didn’t want it to smudge with any of the colours I had already applied to the face.  I used a clean sponge to apply the white to the forehead, nose and lip area as I wanted a clean crisp colour.  I then mixed a tiny bit of grey for around the eye and under the nose.
I enjoyed creating this look because I find it quite easy to copy from a facechart/picture.  I had to make sure I kept stepping away from my work so I could see if I applied the colour in the right places.  The only thing I found difficult was making sure I had clean hands/brushes because the make up is grease based so it can smudge easily.
